Two significant events for ENETOSH are just around the corner: the Days for Safety, Health & Well-being for All at Expo 2025 in Osaka and the transition of network coordination within DGUV from Dr Ulrike Bollmann to Steffi Niederhuber.

In this newsletter, we’ll provide updates on the network's key priorities, including the digitalization of education and training, the wide-ranging activities of our members, and our international initiatives.

A classroom with AI robots as assistant teachers is no longer science fiction—such robots are already entering elementary and middle schools across Japan. While AI may not replace professional educators, it is undoubtedly transforming how people learn. The question is how to integrate technology into curricula.

ENETOSH was a pioneer in systematically analyzing the potential and risks of digitalization for the safety, health, and well-being of teachers and learners in the education sector. This topic has since gained significant momentum. You can find some key contributions on this topic here:

Welcome to the ENETOSH Newsletter 2023!

This is our second e-newsletter, published in October 2023, just in time for the International Congress at A+A in Düsseldorf, where ENETOSH is co-hosting a joint workshop with OSHAfrica, a joint networking meeting with the Section Education and Training for Prevention of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), as well as actively participating in a workshop of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).

There is nothing more practical than a good theory (Kurt Lewin)

This quote from Kurt Lewin, who fled Germany in 1933, seems more relevant than ever. "In view of the knowledge intensity of today's work and the flood of information, there is a need for systematic orientations that help to explain realities in a reflective way and can give direction to action - beyond the impositions of everyday life and mere routines." (Bernd Käpplinger) This also concerns education and training in occupational safety and health.

Digitalisation – tipping point for a culture of prevention?

The "tipping point" is not only known from the discussion about climate change: dramatic climate changes in a very short time with irreversible consequences, such as the melting of the Greenland ice sheet. Digitalisation represents such a critical point, such a tipping factor for the education system. With the introduction of chat GPT at the latest, the traditional pupil-teacher relationship "tilts" irreversibly. This poses new challenges for the integration of safety and health in education and training, from the generation of content to didactic methods to the safety and health of students and teachers.

Spotlight on for the next generation

The next generation sits on the shoulders of the old and therefore sees further than they do (Bernard of Chartres, d. after 1124). What does this mean for OSH as it moves from thinking in terms of "ages of safety" (Andrew Hale) to the performance of 21st century skills? What is the significance of occupational safety and health for the next generation? What are the right research questions on the future of work? How can safety and health be meaningfully integrated into education?

Sustainable networking in OSH

How can something as dynamic as networking be sustainable? What does sustainability mean in a self-accelerating world? Do OSH networks (e.g. the EU-OSHA Official Campaign Partner network, ENSHPO, EPOH, FEES, ENETOSH, ISHCOO, OSHAfrica) sharpen sensitivity to particular issues and pursue these issues continuously over time? Or is the special characteristic of the network openness to new questions, new people and new cooperations?
