SASTP is designed to provide skills and training in the field of addictions counseling.All courses are NAADAC approved and accepted by NM Counseling & Therapy Practice Board for licensure. The Substance Abuse Studies Training Program is primarily funded by the New Mexico State Legislature in recognition of the need for substance abuse counselors in all areas of the state. This program has been selected by the Annapolis Coalition on the Behavioral Health Workforce as an “Innovative Practice in Workforce Development” and is highlighted in their Registry of Innovative Practices at www.annapoliscoalition.org for 2006-2007. In their report, “ Innovation in Workforce Education” (Hoge, Huey & O’Connell, 2004), summarized the goal to recognize seeking innovative initiatives to recognized by Annapolis Coalition address diversity within educational programs while seeking best practices in teaching methods, content, sites of training, student characteristics and instructor qualifications. The Substance Abuse Studies Training Program has been continuously updated since it began in 1989. In 2006, we worked with experts in the UNM Psychology Department and in clinical practice to restructure our courses to provide greater cohesion and to highlight up-to-date evidence-based treatment practice. UNMCE’s ability to develop, plan and deliver training in immediate response to New Mexico’s needs and requests has strengthened to our partnership with the UNM Department of Psychology and evolve of our Substance Abuse Studies Training Program (SASTP) for the 2010-2011 series to be more inclusive of professionals in counseling and non-counseling fields.
