The Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) has produced a DVD, designed primarily for key stage 4 students (14 -16 year olds) aimed at making young people more aware of their employment rights and responsibilities. The DVD provides information on basic employment rights, discrimination issues, sources of information, work experience, health and safety, and workplace bullying. The DVD – entitled ‘Starting out: Your employment rights and responsibilities’ – contains 20 work-place scenarios performed by professional actors linked to six 60-minute lesson plans with supporting worksheets. It will be of particular interest to teachers with responsibilities for teaching the PSHE and Citizenship curriculum, and those preparing students for the world of work, including work experience. Individuals who have connections with secondary schools are being encouraged to review and promote the new DVD.
