Career compass uses plain language to prepare young people for work life Well-being at work, In the Career compass project, we developed career counselling and work coaching for young people needing special support, in co-operation with Luovi Vocational College and the University of Eastern Finland. The instructions and workbooks of the ‘Toward work life’ and ‘From school to work’ group methods were rewritten in plain language to better meet the needs of special groups. Approximately 150 young people participated in the coaching and 40 instructors completed instructor training. The project also strengthened the role of employers in planning young people’s employment paths and evaluating their functional capacity and work ability. Work coaching was used to support students’ own initiatives in finding and adapting to work. During the project, some of the young people at risk of exclusion were employed, first with state subsidies for people with partial work ability and subsequently in a normal employment contract. The dissemination of the group methods will continue in 2012, with the support of the Finnish National Board of Education.
