The CHILT project was developed in 2000 and launched in 2001 at 12 primary schools in the Cologne area. It is a cascaded programme - universal (Step 1 – CHILT I), selective (Step 2 – CHILT II) and targeted prevention (Step 3). The aim of the programme is health education, with topics such as “my body”, nutrition, leisure activities, reduction of inactivity, increase in physical activity and performance early in life. The programme is targeted at special risk groups such as overweight and obese children. Material was developed for Step 1; the teachers were trained in these topics and in their use in their own curricula. In Step 2, overweight and obese children were invited to take part in a school- and family-based programme in which they are trained at school by specialists (nutritionists, psychologists, sport scientists, medical doctors) twice a week. Parents are included on special evenings. Step 3 (CHILT III) is intended for obese children and adolescents (> 8 yrs.) and their families at the German Sport University (data not shown).
