The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was established as one of first faculties of the University of Technology. Nowadays it is the biggest faculty (per 8 faculties) at the Technical University of Kosice. The 12 Departments of the Faculty, which are associated to 4 Institutions, are autonomous units with the function of education, research, development and another activities, which are oriented to the application.
The Department of Safety and Quality production was formed in the frame of the Department of Transport Equipments and Logistics and was established in 2001. This Department is part of the Institute of Safety, Quality and Environmental Science.

The Institute of Safety and Environmental Engineering was created on in 2007 from the Department of Environmental and Safety engineering. The first name was Department of Industrial Ecology.
The Institute ensures education of experts in bachelor study programs - Environmental Engineering and Safety and Health Protection in Work. In engineering study, the institute ensures education of experts in Environmental and Safety Engineering. The PhD. study program of the Institute ensures education of graduants in study program Integral Safety.
